Can I trademark an untrademarked name that is already in use by another company?

There is a company XYZ that does a completely different business than what I am starting. I am registering my business that uses the same name. I want to reiterate that we do completely different things, but wanted to trademark the name. Can I trademark it if it already hasn't been trademarked but is currently in use by a different company?
